Orlando Muffler Repair and Auto Exhaust

The exhaust system in your car consists primarily of the catalytic converter and the muffler. A good exhaust system will reduce noise, reduce exhaust odors, and produce cleaner exhaust.

What Does the Catalytic Converter Do?

The catalytic converter cleans your exhaust

Inside your catalytic converter is a ceramic honeycomb structure that uses heat and oxygen to break down the pollutants in your car exhaust. The effectiveness of the catalytic converter depends on the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. The oxygen sensor in your car monitors the oxygen in your exhaust and uses the information to control the fuel injection system to adjust the oxygen level if needed.

In a damaged catalytic converter, the ceramic honeycomb will begin to break up. Not only does this prevent it from cleaning your exhaust, it can also clog the pathway for your exhaust. As pressure builds up, your car will start running slower and slower. In a case of a damaged catalytic converter, catalytic converter replacement is the only option.

The check engine light will only come on when the car detects a problem with your emissions. Problems related with your catalytic converter are the most common reasons for a check engine light.

How Does a Muffler Work?

It's special shape cancels the sound of the engine

If you've ever heard a car without a muffler, you know it can be very noisy. That's where the muffler comes in. Inside the muffler is a set of perforated tubes specially shaped to reflect the sound waves in such a way that they interfere with each other and cancel one another out. The result is a quietly running car.

How Can I Save Money on a Muffler Replacement?

Custom bending of your exhaust pipes

Corrosion is the most common reason for needing a muffler replacement. If the muffler is corroded, chances are, the exhaust pipes connected to it are also corroding. Exhaust pipe replacement can be the most expensive part of the muffler repair procedure because of the cost of the specially shaped pipes. The muffler replacement specialists at The Car Spa have a special pipe bending machine that can create just the shape you need for your vehicle, saving you money on your car exhaust repair.

Mike Says:

Cars should run quietly

Racecars don't use mufflers because the back pressure created by the muffler subtracts a little from the performance of the engine. The key term here is "a little." Some car enthusiasts feel that a straight through muffler like a glass pack or a cherry bomb will improve the performance of the car (and they like the loud throaty sound the mufflers allow). Unless you're a racecar driver, you won't notice the improved performance, and it's not worth the substantially increased noise your car will produce (just ask your neighbors).
